Rep. Bill Jenkin to serve on the Washington Tourism Marketing Authority Board of Directors

For years, Washington state lawmakers have been working hard to create a state-funded tourism department, as Washington state is one of the few states that doesn't have one.

Rep. Bill Jenkin, R-Prosser was recently selected to serve on the newly formed Washington Tourism Marketing Authority Board of Directors.

“It's time to address our lack of focus on true tourism marketing and management in this state,” said Jenkin. “The Washington Tourism Marketing Authority Board of Directors is a great step in the movement to improve our state's tourism program. I'm glad to have this opportunity to be one of the voices at the table.”

The State Tourism Commission was created in 2007 to direct the state tourism program administered through the Department of Commerce. The Commission was comprised of public and private industry representatives and was tasked with promoting and expanding the state tourism industry. The Legislature terminated this commission at the end of the 2009-11 biennium.

Senate Bill 5251, signed into law during the 2018 legislative session, creates the Washington Tourism Marketing Authority to manage the financial resources for the development of a statewide tourism-marketing plan.
